The Kalam Mela, Kalam Mela or Swat Summer Festival is a cultural and recreational event held in the month of July or August every year in the natural valley of Kalam and Mahodan, 100 km from Swat, Pakistan. The festival is organized in the style of the Shandor Polo Festival. On those days, when the plains of Pakistan are hot and humid, tourists are enjoying the cold weather in Kalam and Khema villages. Mahudand. The festival is organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Department in co-operation with the Pakistan Army. Sports, cultural and recreational activities are organized during the week.

Shandur Polo Festival

The beginning of polo in Shandor goes to Balti Raj of Skardu. Ali Sher Khan Anchan who also built the polo ground of Shandor. Shandor invites visitors to experience the traditional polo tournament, which has been held in the first week of July every year since 1936 between local teams from Gilgit and Chitral. Organized and funded by the Tourism Corporation of NWFP, the tournament is held at the world's highest polo ground, Shandor Top (the pass itself is at 3,800 meters). The festival includes folk music, dance and a camping village has been set up. The first episode of the Himalayan Polo Tournament is shown with Michael Palin.

Different teams from Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan have always played polo close to their original form. In the early 20th century, the game was sponsored by the British in neighboring India.

In order to decide the final teams to play in the Shandor Polo Festival, preliminary matches are played in both Chitral and Gilgit, with the best horses and players being selected for the final games by local juries. The festival will begin on July 7. Chitral and Gilgit A, B, C and D teams during the tournament. Compete in polo. Each team has six members with 2-4 reserve players in case of injury. It is divided into two parts with an interval of 10 minutes. During breaks, locals enchant the audience with traditional and cultural performances. The game decided in favor of the team scoring the most goals. The final will be on July 9.

The field measures 200 meters by 56 meters (typical polo field is approximately 27 270 meters by 150 meters), 60 cm high stone walls run the length of the field on both sides instead of the board. With six players on one side, the field can be quite crowded. This has the advantage of slowing down the speed a bit, which is all things considered, perhaps increasing the safety to some extent. Athletes rarely wear helmets, horses often do not have straps, and malt often do not have grips or straps.

history

The beginning of polo in Shandor goes to Balti Raj of Skardu. Ali Sher Khan Anchan who also built the polo ground of Shandor. But the beginning of polo in Shandor goes to the British occupiers who made the construction of the polo ground possible. It is said that in 1935, Evelyn Hee Cobb, the British administrator for the Northern Territories, asked Naat Kabul Hayat Kakakhel to build a well-built polo ground in Shandor. He built a polo ground with the help of people. The polo ground was later renamed "Mass Junali". The word "Mass Junali" is derived from the Khwar language. The word "mass" means moon and "junali" means polo ground. Kobe was impressed with Kakakhel's resources and performance and wanted to reward him for his service, but Kakakhel refused to accept any reward for his work. Instead, for the common good, Kakakhel asked Kobe to bring trout to store in local rivers. Cobb called for live trout from England and dropped them into the Geyser River. The service established the Directorate of Fisheries and provided employment to hundreds of people. Now the weight of these fish in Lake Hondarp has reached 24 kg and in Baha Lake Khakush Nala it has reached 40 kg.

As a result, Mass Junali became a link between the people of Chitral District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and neighboring Gilgit-Baltistan. Many people come from all over the world to watch the polo match between Chitral District and Ghazir District.
